MATT BAILEY

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST

Qualifications

  • BachEx&SportsSci

  • Masters Clinical Ex Physiology (ACU)

ABOUT MATT

Matt holds a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science and a Master’s in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Australian Catholic University. He has a strong clinical interest in exercise-based rehabilitation for concussion and post-concussion syndrome, working closely with the Sports Doctors and Physiotherapists at the Melbourne Sports Concussion Clinic.

Matt plays an important role in guiding patients through the exercise rehabilitation phase of concussion recovery, using carefully structured and evidence-based exercise prescription. He works closely within the multidisciplinary concussion team to ensure rehabilitation programs are safe, progressive, and tailored to each patient’s symptoms and recovery stage.

A key component of Matt’s work involves the use of objective exercise testing and monitoring tools, including the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test, to assess exercise tolerance and identify symptom thresholds. These assessments allow Matt to design targeted rehabilitation programs that progressively improve cardiovascular tolerance and assist in the safe return to normal activity, school, work, and sport.

Matt has a particular interest in supporting patients experiencing ongoing or persistent post-concussion symptoms, where carefully prescribed sub-symptom threshold exercise can play an important role in recovery. His programs are designed to gradually restore exercise capacity while minimising symptom flare-ups and improving overall confidence in returning to activity.

In addition to his work in concussion rehabilitation, Matt has extensive experience designing exercise programs for individuals managing chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and general physical deconditioning.

At Ringwood Sports Medicine, Matt also works with patients one-on-one and leads specialised strength, balance, and conditioning programs, helping individuals safely improve their physical capacity and overall health.

Matt believes that well-designed exercise is one of the most powerful tools in rehabilitation, and he is passionate about helping patients rebuild their fitness, confidence, and return safely to the activities they enjoy.
