The Melbourne Sports Concussion Clinic -
A Concussion Rehab Helping You Recover Safely and Get Back to What You Love
Imagine you’re playing your favorite sport, and everything is going as usual. Then, suddenly, you take a hard tackle, fall awkwardly, or collide with another player. When you get back up, you think, “I’m fine.”
But later that day, something feels different. You have a headache. You feel dizzy. Maybe you are unusually tired or find it harder to concentrate.
This is where a concussion can become difficult to understand. There are no obvious symptoms, and recovery does not look the same for everyone.
At the Melbourne Sports Concussion Clinic, we understand how frustrating it can be when a concussion stops you from doing the things you enjoy. Our team provides personalised concussion assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation to help you return to sport, school, work, and everyday activities safely and confidently. We work with people from junior and community sport through to professional athletes, because we know that no two concussions are the same.
What is Concussion Rehab?
A concussion can affect more than just your ability to play sport. It can cause physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms that interfere with school, work, exercise, and daily life.
Concussion rehabilitation is a structured process that helps you recover after a concussion and gradually return to your normal activities.
That is why we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our concussion rehabilitation services are designed around you, taking into account your symptoms, activity levels, sporting requirements, and stage of recovery.
Depending on your individual needs, your rehabilitation may include:
-
Exercise-based rehabilitation
-
Gradual return to physical activity
-
Vestibular and balance rehabilitation
-
Vision and eye-movement exercises
-
Neck rehabilitation
-
Cognitive and activity management
-
Return-to-school or return-to-work guidance
-
A structured return-to-sport program
Our goal is to help you understand your symptoms, manage them appropriately, and gradually rebuild your ability to participate in the activities that matter to you.
When Do You Need Concussion Rehabilitation?
You may benefit from concussion rehabilitation if you continue to experience symptoms after a head knock, collision, fall, or other injury.
The common symptoms of a concussion include:
-
Headaches
-
Dizziness
-
Balance problems
-
Nausea
-
Fatigue
-
Blurred or uncomfortable vision
-
Sensitivity to light or noise
-
Difficulty concentrating
-
Memory problems
-
Feeling mentally slowed down
-
Changes in sleep
-
Irritability or changes in mood
-
Reduced tolerance to exercise
Some may experience only a few of these symptoms, while others might experience more. The symptoms can also change as you recover.
If you have experienced a potential concussion, it is vital to get assessed by a healthcare professional with experience in concussion management. A concussion diagnosis should be made by an appropriately qualified health professional, such as a doctor or physiotherapist experienced in diagnosing and managing concussion.
How Do We Approach Concussion Rehab?
At Melbourne Sports Concussion Clinic, we take a structured and individualised approach to concussion care.
We begin by understanding what happened, what symptoms you are experiencing, and how the injury is affecting your everyday life.

Our clinicians may assess areas such as:
-
Symptoms and medical history
-
Cognitive function
-
Balance
-
Vision and eye movements
-
Physical function
-
Exercise tolerance
-
Your ability to manage school, work, or sporting activities
We may also use ImPACT concussion testing as part of the assessment process. ImPACT is a computer-based tool that evaluates aspects of brain function and can provide useful information to help our clinicians understand the effects of a concussion and guide rehabilitation.
We then use the information from your assessment to develop a rehabilitation plan appropriate to your individual needs.
What Does Our Concussion Rehabilitation Include?
The concussion rehabilitation services we offer include:
-
Exercise-Based Rehabilitation
Exercise can be an important part of concussion recovery. However, returning to exercise too quickly or doing too much too soon may aggravate symptoms.
Our exercise physiologists and other clinicians can develop a carefully structured exercise program based on your symptoms and stage of recovery.
We may use exercise testing, including the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test, where appropriate, to assess exercise tolerance and help identify symptom thresholds. This information can help us gradually build your exercise capacity while monitoring your response.
Our aim isn’t to get you to exercise again. We want to help you progressively rebuild your physical capacity and confidence.
2. Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation
Some people experience dizziness, balance problems, or discomfort when moving their head or looking at busy environments after a concussion.
Our rehabilitation may include exercises designed to address these problems and improve your ability to move and perform everyday activities comfortably.
3. Vision and Eye-Movement Rehabilitation
A concussion can sometimes affect how your eyes move and work together. This can make reading, using screens, or concentrating visually more difficult.
Where appropriate, our clinicians can assess these issues and incorporate suitable exercises into your rehabilitation program.
4. Neck Rehabilitation
Neck pain and stiffness can occur after a head or body impact and may sometimes contribute to symptoms such as headaches.
Where neck-related problems are identified, our physiotherapists can include appropriate assessment and rehabilitation as part of your overall concussion management.
5. Cognitive and Activity Management
Recovery is not only about physical activity.
If you are struggling with concentration, studying, working, or using screens, we can help you understand how to gradually manage these activities.
We can work with you to develop a plan that lets you gradually return to your normal routine without pushing beyond your current tolerance.
Returning to Sport After a Concussion
One of the biggest questions athletes have after a concussion is “When can I play again?”
We understand that you may be eager to get back on the field, court, or track. However, returning too quickly can put you at risk of further problems.
That is why we use a structured approach to return to sport.
Your return may progress through different levels of activity, such as:
-
Everyday activities and symptom-limited movement
-
Light aerobic exercise
-
Sport-specific exercise
-
More demanding, non-contact training
-
Full-contact training when medically appropriate
-
Return to competition
The exact progression depends on your individual recovery.
We monitor your symptoms and physical response as you progress. If symptoms increase, we can adjust your rehabilitation plan rather than simply pushing through them.
Our aim is to help you return to your sport safely, progressively, and with confidence.
Take the First Step Towards Recovery
A concussion can leave you unsure about what you should and should not do. You may be worried about returning to sport too soon, struggling to keep up at school or work, or simply wondering why you still do not feel like yourself.
Well, you do not have to figure it out alone.
At the Melbourne Sports Concussion Clinic, we provide structured, individualised concussion assessment and rehabilitation to help you understand your symptoms and work towards a safe return to the activities you enjoy.
Our team supports athletes and individuals from youth through to professional levels.
If you have recently experienced a head knock, are experiencing ongoing concussion symptoms, or need guidance with your return to sport, we are here to help.
