POST-CONCUSSION INJURY TESTING
If you have experienced a potential concussion, the ImPACT post-injury test should be administered within 72 hours of a concussion to all athletes ages 12 and up. The test can be
re-administered every seven to 10 days to document improvement of neurocognitive function and should be repeated until the athlete is cleared by his or her healthcare professional.
While we prefer to use the results against your BASELINE test results, we don’t actually need the baseline as we can also use normative data for your age and sex.
The ImPACT post-injury test is a tool that helps us determine with other tests whether
-
a concussion has occurred
-
the extend of the concussion
-
to repeat test so see how a patient is recovering.
WhAT IS INVOLVED IN YOUR POST CONCUSSION ASSESSMENT & DIAGNOSIS?
To establish an accurate diagnosis of concussion and to grade the level of concussion we run through a number of tests in your post-concussion consultation at MSCC

-
We take a medical history of the concussion event/episode and assess all symptoms and signs at the time of the concussion and ongoing upto the time of the appointment
-
You will undertake an ImPACT computerised post-concussion test that takes around 20-30 minutes. We then review this result against your baselilne (if you have one) or against you age/sex related data we have.
-
You will complete a modified SCAT6 test to further evaluate your current brain state and potential concussion status
-
You will undergo a Vestibular Oculomotor Motor Screening (VOMS) Assessment
The combination of these various assessment tools gives us very high sensitivity to determine that you have sustained a concussion and the grade/level of concussion
Each test when combined with each other increases the sensitivity and specificity of the ImPACT testing tool to give us greater certainty in your concussion diagnosis.
An athlete can return to his or her sport when:
-
All symptoms (physical and cognitive) are gone.
-
Testing shows that cognitive function has returned to normal.
-
A health professional at MSCC trained in the management of concussions or in consultation with your GP, provides written clearance.
