What is CTE?Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease that is associated with repeated head injuries, particularly concussions. It is commonly found in athletes who participate in contact sports such as football, boxing, hockey, basketball and soccer, but it can also affect military veterans and individuals with a history of repetitive head trauma. CTE is characterized by the accumulation of an abnormal protein called ‘tau’ in the brain. Tau protein forms clumps or tangles, which can disrupt the normal functioning of brain cells and lead to their degeneration over time. The symptoms of CTE typically appear years or even decades after the initial head trauma, and they can vary widely from person to person. Some common symptoms of CTE include memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, aggression, depression, anxiety, impulse control problems, and progressive dementia. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience difficulties with motor skills, speech, and coordination. In severe cases, CTE can lead to significant cognitive and behavioral changes, ultimately affecting a person's quality of life. Diagnosing CTE is challenging. It was only thought to be definitively confirmed through a post-mortem examination of the brain, However, more recently researchers are working on developing diagnostic tools to detect CTE during a person's lifetime, such as brain imaging techniques and biomarker tests. Currently, there is no cure for CTE, and treatment focuses on managing the symptoms and improving the individual's quality of life. Prevention is crucial, and efforts are being made to raise awareness about the risks of repetitive head injuries and to implement safety measures in sports and other activities to minimize the occurrence of such injuries.
